The Dubuque Community School District’s Summer Academy is a FREE six-week, full-day learning experience to give students a reading-focused morning combined with amazing afternoon enrichment. Summer Academy is designed to help students gain new academic skills to ensure they are prepared to enter school in the fall ready to excel.¬†Space is limited and will be reserved for students who are not reading at grade level.

Fun, High-Quality Experience

Summer Academy will feature:

  • District teachers working to strengthen reading skills
  • Small class sizes
  • Curriculum aligned with Common Core
  • Activities in STEM, creative arts and health/exercise
  • Field trips and service projects
  • Free school bus transportation from pick-up/drop-off sites located at neighborhood schools

Program Goals

Summer Academy expands learning time to prevent summer learning loss that can occur for many children. The program is designed to accomplish the following goals:

  1. Students will increase their reading skills
  2. Students will strengthen their self-confidence
  3. Students will improve their social skills
  4. Parents will become more engaged in their child’s education

7 a.m. Early drop-off (A fee for extended care based on sliding scale applies)
8:30 a.m. Breakfast and community time
9 a.m. Lesson opener and read aloud: Teachers will introduce the day’s lesson and text before dividing students into small groups.
9:30 a.m. Reading station: small group instruction
10:05 a.m. Reading station: independent work
10:40 a.m. Reading station: technology station where students complete lessons on laptops or tablets.
11:15 a.m. Games and intervention pull-outs: students play literacy games while teachers lead interventions.
12 p.m. Lunch and recess
1 p.m. Physical activity
2 p.m. STEM/arts activity
3 p.m. Dismissal
6 p.m. Extended care pick-up (A fee for extended care based on a sliding scale applies)

Summer Academy is a partnership between the Dubuque Community School District, Every Child/Every Promise and the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque, with additional support from the McDonough Foundation, Alliant Energy, the Dubuque Racing Association and the City of Dubuque.
