On Friday, July 10th after a long week of math, the kids of the Playground Explorations program at Comiskey Park displayed the entrepreneurial skills they had learned by hosting a lemonade stand. After just an hour and a half, they had raised $103 and engaged many community members. Those who stopped by to enjoy the ice cold lemonade included: city police officers out on patrol, over 15 Future Talk teenagers from the Multicultural Family Center, Leisure Services and AmeriCorps members, as well as veterans and other community members.
The kids learned about supply and demand, cost of supplies and customer service. Four things they remembered to use when engaging their customers were: a nice smile, a good attitude, using good manners and being polite and respectful. The group decided to donate all of their funds to the Ronald McDonald House in Iowa City to help other kids like themselves who need some extra care.
The Playground Explorations Program is being offered by Leisure Services and is just one of many summer enrichment programs being offered throughout the community this summer by GLR partners. Click here to see more programs being offered and to learn more about how to prevent the summer slide.
